Homs/ Damascus, SANA – Ceremonies were held Friday at a number of churches in various provinces marking the Dormition of Virgin Mary.
The Feast of the Dormition is celebrated on August 15 each year. It commemorates the repose of the Mother of Jesus Christ.
Greek Orthodox Patriarch John X Yazigi of Antioch and all East resided over a mass at the Church of Elijah the Prophet in al-Hawash village in Wadi al-Nadar area in Homs countryside on the occasion.
He prayed to God to protect Syria’s army, people and leader, hoping that security and stability will prevail once again in the country, which has been ravaged by the terrorist war waged against it since 2011.
“We Christians and Muslims are the sons of this land, the land of civilization….We pray that God may bestow courage upon us to be able speak up for peace and justice,” said Patriarch Yazigi.
Meanwhile, prayer was held at al-Zaytoun Church in Damascus to celebrate the occasion, which was led by Melkit Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and all East Gregory III Laham.
