U.S. sources: Congressional delegation expected to visit Syria

Washington, SANA-American sources have revealed the intention of a delegation from the U.S. Congress to undertake a visit to Syria in the coming days.

The sources stated in remarks to the Lebanese newspaper “Al-Modon” that “the American delegation is composed of members from both the Republican and Democratic parties,” without naming them.

They clarified that “there is a state of eagerness among members of the U.S. Congress to assess the Syrian reality, and therefore it is not unlikely that the visit will take place.”

According to other sources, the visit primarily aims to “discuss the issue of lifting or easing the American sanctions imposed on Syria, in addition to humanitarian issues that are at the core of American interest, as Syria has been suffering from protracted crises for years. Therefore, any American move in this direction may focus on exploring ways to provide humanitarian aid and discussing the lifting of sanctions.”

For his part, the President of the Syrian American Council, Farouk Bilal, said that there is “a desire among members of Congress to understand the Syrian situation after the fall of the deposed regime.”

He added that “these visits, even if unofficial, open channels for diplomatic communication between Damascus and Washington,” noting that a meeting had previously taken place between members of the U.S. Congress and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani at the Munich Security Conference, which was held in mid-February.
