Damascus, SANA- Health Ministry discussed with representatives of international organizations, UN agencies, and active civil society associations, the need to unify efforts to determine the priorities and needs of the health sector to develop it and improve its services.

During the meeting which was held at the Center for Strategic Health Studies on Monday, the participants dealt with the work of the Heath Directorates and Departments during the previous period and proposals for developing them, stressing that the health care system in Syria has witnessed a deterioration for a long time, and many health facilities as well operate below the required level.

The Participants said that recovery of the health sector in Syria depends largely on its individual’s efforts , as well as their will to rebuild health services.

They also pointed out that there is a large funding gap, and an urgent need to purchase necessary medical equipment and supplies.

WHO Coordinator in Syria, Azret Kalmykov, said that 57 percent of Syria’s hospitals are out of service, 37 percent of primary health care centers are fully operational, and widespread shortages of supplies have been reported, noting that 15.8 million people need humanitarian health assistance in 2025.

Kalmykov called for the need to strengthen health systems in Syria, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, and to expand the humanitarian response plan to cover the northeast and northwest of the country.
