Damascus, May 19 (SANA) Interior Ministry spokesman Nour al-Din al-Baba said that preliminary investigations into the explosion Tuesday in the Bab Sharqi had uncovered initial leads that are currently being pursued to determine the parties involved and uncover the circumstances surrounding the attack.
In remarks to the Syrian al-Ikhbariya TV channel on Tuesday evening, al-Baba noted that the collection of preliminary evidence indicated the involvement of a specific entity behind the bombing.
Al-Baba pointed out that the terrorist cells could be linked to remnants of the deposed regime, foreign-backed militias, or extremist groups, stressing that the ultimate objective is to achieve “zero terrorist operations” within Syrian society.
The spokesman disclosed that the ministry would soon release details regarding the targeted cells, the number of detainees, and the mechanisms used in implementing terrorist plots.
He reiterated that the security services had achieved significant accomplishments despite existing security challenges, adding that efforts continue to dismantle terrorist cells and pursue those involved through a strategy based on preventive security measures and pre-emptive operations.
Al-Baba further explained that the Interior Ministry is working to enhance the capabilities of its security personnel and benefit from local and international expertise, alongside modernizing surveillance and tracking systems using advanced technologies.
He stressed the importance of citizens’ cooperation in reporting any suspicious activities.
The spokesman renewed the ministry’s commitment to preserving the stability of Syrian society and strengthening coordination among various security agencies to protect citizens and public property.
Earlier Tuesday, one soldier was martyred and 23 people, most of them civilians, were injured in a car bombing near a building affiliated with the Ministry of Defense in the Bab Sharqi area of Damascus.
