Damascus, May 9 (SANA) A convoy of Iraqi fuel tankers travelling through Syria to the coastal city of Baniyas was involved in a road accident on the M4 highway near the town of Bsanqoul in Idlib countryside, resulting in the death of a civilian and injuries to three drivers.
Director of Public Relations at the General Authority for Borders and Customs, Mazen Alloush, said in a statement on Facebook that the convoy was heading toward the Baniyas oil port when, according to preliminary information, two tankers experienced brake failure while in the convoy. This led to a collision between the two tankers and the explosion of one of them, triggering a fire at the scene.
Alloush added that the incident killed the driver of a passing civilian vehicle and left three tanker drivers injured, who were transferred to hospital for treatment. Emergency response teams immediately extinguished the fire, secured the area, and cleared the roadway.
He extended condolences to the victim’s family and wished the injured a speedy recovery, stressing that authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and take necessary measures.
The Iraqi Border Ports Authority had earlier announced on May 1 the start of crude oil exports via the Rabia–al-Yarubiyah crossing, with the first convoy of 70 tankers heading to Syria.
