Ankara, Junee 7 (SANA) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Türkiye is intensifying diplomatic contacts to support efforts aimed at reaching an understanding between the U.S. and Iran and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
In an interview with South Korea’s JTBC television channel, Fidan said Türkiye is prepared to participate in mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz if formally requested or if Washington and Tehran reach an agreement on the matter.
Fidan expressed optimism about the prospects for an agreement between the U.S. and Iran, saying he remains in regular contact with both countries, as well as Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator, and other regional parties involved in the negotiations.
“Türkiye is doing everything it can to help both sides reach an understanding or agreement,” Fidan said, adding that he expects a broad consensus to emerge on the final version of an initial draft agreement.
He said discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz have moved to the forefront of negotiations, overtaking the nuclear issue due to the significant impact of the waterway’s closure on global trade.
Fidan warned that keeping the strait closed for several more months could lead to severe food shortages in parts of Africa, describing such a scenario as a “global nightmare,” while expressing confidence that the conflict between Washington and Tehran could eventually be resolved despite the challenges.
He also accused Israel of seeking to obstruct a potential agreement, arguing that a U.S.-Iran understanding would not serve Israeli interests, and called on the international community to press Israel to moderate its actions in the context of peace efforts.
