Damascus, April 12 (SANA) – The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission (SAEC) organized a specialized training course in cooperation with the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports and Customs to enhance the capabilities of radiation detection teams working within the customs administration.
The course was held at the Training Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies in Damascus and aimed at improving the readiness of border crossings and raising the efficiency of radiation monitoring personnel.
According to the Commission’s Telegram channel, the two-week training program, which is the fourth of its kind, included 25 participants from various customs branches.
Participants attended scientific lectures on the nature of ionizing radiation and methods of measuring it, in addition to practical field exercises simulating possible scenarios involving the entry of radioactive materials through border crossings and the procedures required to handle them in accordance with approved safety and response protocols.
The Commission explained that the course focused on strengthening the capabilities of radiation detection teams at border crossings and enabling them to operate monitoring and measurement equipment efficiently to ensure higher protection levels at entry points.
It added that the training is part of a comprehensive national program aimed at building specialized personnel in nuclear and radiological safety and security, while reinforcing national institutions’ commitment to relevant international standards.
Earlier this month, the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission organized a specialized course on radiological emergency response targeting emergency physicians and healthcare personnel to enhance their readiness to respond to radiation incidents.
