Damascus, April 6 (SANA) – Syria’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research organized a scientific symposium at Damascus University on Monday focusing on autism diagnosis and care, as part of activities marking World Autism Awareness Month 2026.
Held in cooperation with the “Take My Hand” Foundation, the event—titled “Autism in Syria 2026: From Crisis to Comprehensive Care”—brought together doctors and specialists from inside Syria and abroad to discuss the current situation of autism spectrum disorder in the country and ways to improve early diagnosis and treatment programs.
Participants highlighted key challenges, including the shortage of specialized professionals and the need to expand rehabilitation and support services, while emphasizing the importance of integrating people with autism into society and strengthening research and training programs.
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi stressed the importance of early diagnosis, noting that timely intervention significantly improves opportunities for learning and development.

He also called for establishing an integrated system of medical, psychological and social support for children with autism and their families.
Speakers also underscored the role of universities and research institutions in developing diagnostic tools, training specialists and supporting evidence-based policymaking in the field.
Officials from the ministries of education and religious affairs addressed the symposium as well, emphasizing the ethical and educational responsibility of society to support children with autism and ensure inclusive learning environments.
Meanwhile, the head of Syria’s Planning and Statistics Authority announced ongoing efforts to establish a national database on autism, based on field surveys conducted across the country, aimed at improving monitoring and support programs.
The event was attended by government officials, academic leaders, faculty members, students and specialists interested in health and educational issues.
