Damascus, Sept. 9 (SANA) The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors removed Syria’s non-compliance item from its agenda on Wednesday after the completion of the relevant technical and legal requirements, marking a significant development in the country’s peaceful nuclear program.
The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission said the decision followed 18 months of intensive national and diplomatic efforts, reaffirming Syria’s commitment to international standards and transparency while preserving its sovereign right to develop nuclear technology for national development.
The commission said the move affirms Syria’s right to develop and use nuclear science for peaceful purposes under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, including in radiation medicine, agriculture and scientific research.
It said Syria had provided technical and logistical facilities for international verification and placed all discovered nuclear materials under the safeguards and monitoring system.
The commission added that the decision could facilitate research grants, training fellowships and exchanges of technical expertise with other countries, supporting Syria’s technological and health sectors.
It also said the move closes a prolonged period in which the nuclear file had been used as a means of political pressure against Syria and removes the basis for restrictions or sanctions on those grounds.
Syrian Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Mudar al-Okla said last month that the commission, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, had worked to meet the technical requirements for assessments of nuclear materials and waste associated with the former regime under the international safeguards system and the IAEA’s legal framework.
