Idleb, Feb.08 (SANA) Syrian officials and humanitarian organizations met on Sunday to discuss urgent measures to secure and protect camps affected by recent flooding in Idleb countryside, amid continued assessments of damage caused by heavy rainfall across northern and western Syria.
The meeting was held at al-Rahma School in al-Ansar camp in rural Idleb and was attended by the ministers of health and of emergency and disaster management, the governors of Idleb and Lattakia, and representatives of humanitarian organizations. Discussions focused on identifying practical solutions to improve camp safety and reduce risks to residents.
Severe flooding caused by heavy rains over the weekend has resulted in multiple casualties. A volunteer from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and two children were killed, while a third child was rescued. Four volunteers were injured while carrying out rescue operations in Latakia countryside, and another volunteer was hurt while attempting to save a child trapped by floodwaters.
On Saturday, two children were killed and a third rescued after powerful flash floods swept through the Ain Issa area in northern Latakia countryside following intense rainfall.
In Idleb, torrential rains triggered flash floods that swept through seasonal waterways, destroying and inundating several tents in Kherbet al-Jawz camps west of the city. Authorities carried out emergency evacuations and opened schools and temporary shelters to accommodate displaced families.
Flooding in Latakia countryside also led to civilians being trapped and several roads being cut off, further complicating rescue and relief efforts. Authorities and humanitarian agencies continue to assess damage and provide emergency assistance to affected communities.
