London, Sept. 9 (SANA) Britain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna, Sonia Farrey, said that Syria has taken important steps toward addressing the legacy of the deposed regime and supporting the IAEA’s efforts to resolve nuclear safeguards issues that have remained outstanding for 15 years.
In a statement published on the official website of the British Foreign Office, Farrey said that the IAEA Board of Governors’ decision to remove the “non-compliance” item concerning Syria from its agenda represents an opportunity to recognize the progress the country has made. She also congratulated Syria on the development.
Farrey stressed that the UK stands with Syria in its efforts to address the legacy of the ousted regime and welcomed the constructive engagement between Syria and the IAEA, including visits by the agency’s Director General. She described this as an important step forward after years in which effective cooperation had been lacking.
She also highlighted the efforts being undertaken by the Syrian government during the country’s national recovery phase, encouraging it to maintain the positive momentum achieved in recent months.
“We recognize this important achievement for Syria and the agency’s efforts to address long-standing safeguards issues through dialogue, transparency, and cooperation,” Farrey said, adding that the development demonstrates the ability of the international nuclear non-proliferation system to address even the most difficult issues when states engage constructively with the IAEA.
