Damascus, Jan. 13 (SANA) Syria’s Interior Ministry announced Tuesday that it had arrested two individuals in connection with the theft of historical weapons from the National Museum in Damascus, recovering 24 of the stolen items so far.
In a statement on its Telegram channel, the ministry said the arrests came as part of a targeted operation following careful monitoring. The individuals, identified by their initials, admitted to stealing the weapons and selling them to arms dealers. Efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining pieces.
The suspects have been referred to the relevant authorities for legal proceedings, the ministry added.
The operation underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Syria’s cultural heritage and cracking down on the illegal trade of historical artifacts.
The arrests follow a previous theft at the National Museum on October 10, when several ancient statues and rare artifacts were stolen.
