Damascus, May 3 (SANA) Syria’s General Federation of Trade Unions on Sunday opened its second General Council session after the liberation, focusing on labor conditions, wages, and the role of workers in reconstruction.

The two-day session, held at the federation’s headquarters in Damascus, is chaired by Federation President Fawaz al-Ahmad and attended by Transport Minister Yarub Badr and Tourism Minister Mazen al-Salhani.

In opening remarks, al-Ahmad said Syrian workers are central to rebuilding efforts, calling for stronger labor protections, improved workplace safety standards, and greater independence for trade unions.

He urged a review of wages and incentives in both public and private sectors to reflect rising living costs, as well as expanding social insurance coverage and strengthening job security through stable contracts.

Al-Ahmad also highlighted the importance of cooperation between government, employers, and workers to create jobs and support economic and social stability.

A representative of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, Raghda Zidan, said the government is working to update labor legislation, including laws governing employment and social insurance, to align with future needs.

The government, she added, is also reviewing occupational health and safety regulations and the organization of labor inside and outside Syria, including foreign workers.

The federation represents Syrian workers in regional and international organizations and is seeking to modernize its operations and expand social protection programs in the post-liberation phase.
