Damascus, Oct. 4 (SANA) The Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management is actively conducting field operations in Hasakah Province to reduce flood risks and safeguard residential and agricultural infrastructure ahead of the rainy season, Emergency and Disaster Management Minister Raed al-Saleh confirmed Sunday.
Following the completion of preliminary risk-mitigation works in Ya’rubiya and Tel Hamis, emergency teams are currently focusing operations on the Khabur River and adjacent areas, Minister al-Saleh stated in a post on platform X. Technical crews are clearing the riverbed and reinforcing soil embankments at high-vulnerability sites to improve water flow and prevent overbanking.
The ministry is operating under an integrated plan built on prevention, readiness, and early response, noting that proactive preparation remains essential to protecting lives and property, al-Saleh added.
The ongoing measures form part of the second phase of Hasakah’s comprehensive flood mitigation strategy. Hasakah faces recurring seasonal flooding and river overflows along the Khabur basin—the main tributary of the Euphrates River—while Ya’rubiya and Tel Hamis regularly experience flash floods originating from natural drainage valleys along the Syrian-Iraqi border.
Torrential rainfall in March previously triggered heavy flooding along the Khabur River, inundating hundreds of homes across Hasakah city neighborhoods—including Ghuwayran, al-Nashwa, al-Meridian, and al-Lailiya—and necessitating urgent emergency intervention.
