Aoun: Lebanon is keen to build excellent relations with Syria

Beirut, SANA – Lebanese President Joseph Aoun affirmed his country’s commitment to building excellent relations with Syria, ensuring the interests of both countries.

“Lebanon is keen to build excellent relations with its neighbor, Syria, for the benefit of both countries, as the prosperity of one depends on the prosperity of the other, just as every pain we share is shared,” President Aoun said in a speech marking Lebanese Army Day, adding: “Lebanon can only deal with Syria as a natural and geographical partner, and as an incubator for every real solution in the region.”

The Lebanese President continued, saying: “The stage requires a real review of relations between our two countries, based on respect for sovereignty and good neighborliness, and on reopening pending files wisely and responsibly. The next stage also requires practical steps to activate security and economic coordination between Beirut and Damascus, including cooperation in the reconstruction file, combating drugs, and facilitating trade and agricultural exchange.”

He pointed out that among the matters that were also focused on was defining, demarcating and stabilizing the land and sea borders with Syria, with the assistance of the United States, France, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the relevant teams in the United Nations, and resolving the refugee issue and other matters.
