Hama, March 1 (SANA) Nawaeir defeated Talia 28–27 in a tight match on Saturday in Hama, securing the top spot in the northern group of the second-stage “Final 6” round of the Syrian Men’s First Division Handball League.
Speaking to SANA, Talia coach Ayman al-Saffan said the match carried special importance as both clubs are among the strongest sides in the competition.
“The game was difficult for both teams due to the high skill and experience of their players,” he added.
Nawaeir handball supervisor Haitham al-Jammal said derby matches rarely feature much technical play because both teams are focused solely on securing the win.
He noted that Nawaeir were missing three injured players and another who was suspended, yet the squad still produced a strong performance and came away with the victory.
Nawaeir finished top of the northern group with the win, adding to an earlier 37–25 victory over Furat. Talia took second place after also beating Furat 29–22.
