US Treasury secretary threatens ‘unprecedented’ economic measures against Iran
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent speaks during a press briefing in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in May 2026.

Washington, Aug. 14 (SANA) U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington would announce additional economic measures against Iran next week, as the United States steps up pressure on Tehran amid heightened regional tensions.

Bessent said in a television interview that the measures would seek to impose a level of economic isolation on Iran “the world has never seen before,” Reuters reported Friday.

He said the measures would also include maintaining the blockade at the Strait of Hormuz, preventing goods from entering or leaving Iranian ports.

The remarks come amid an escalation in U.S. economic and military pressure on Iran.

The U.S. military said in mid-April that a blockade of Iranian ports had been fully implemented within 36 hours of its announcement.
