Baghdad, June 28 (SANA) Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Sunday called for a summit bringing together the Gulf Arab states, Iraq and Iran to discuss regional security and ways to reduce tensions, saying Baghdad is ready to host the meeting.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Baghdad with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Hussein said regional security should be the shared responsibility of the countries of the region and stressed that ending the conflict remains a priority.
According to the Iraqi News Agency, Hussein said Iraq continues to pursue a policy of de-escalation and dialogue, noting that Baghdad had previously played a role in facilitating diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran.
The minister’s remarks came after Iraq’s Ministerial Council for National Security said on June 8 that Iraqi territory and airspace must not be used to launch attacks against neighboring countries. The council also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Iraq’s sovereignty, restricting weapons to state control and holding those responsible for destabilizing the country accountable.
The proposal comes amid heightened regional tensions. Earlier on Sunday, Bahrain and Kuwait reported missile and drone attacks following renewed military escalation in the Gulf following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran on June 17.
