Capitals, Sept. 9 (SANA) The European Union, Canada and Latvia welcomed Wednesday the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors’ unanimous decision to remove the Syria-related non-compliance item from its agenda, describing it as an important step toward resolving longstanding nuclear issues and strengthening cooperation with the agency.
EU Ambassador to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna Carl Hallergard said in a post on X that the decision brings consideration of outstanding issues related to the nuclear activities of the ousted Assad regime to a close.
Hallergard praised Syria’s transparency and cooperation with the IAEA in addressing issues related to the file and expressed appreciation for the efforts of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Canada also welcomed the decision, with Canadian Ambassador to Syria and Lebanon Gregory Galligan describing it as an important step for both Syria and the IAEA.
Galligan said the decision demonstrates what transparency and genuine cooperation can achieve by addressing longstanding issues and laying the groundwork for stronger cooperation between Syria and the agency.
Latvia, meanwhile, described the decision as a “historic moment” for Syria, the region and the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.
Latvia’s mission to the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe in Vienna said in a post on X that the move followed the clarification of issues stemming from the legacy of the deposed Assad regime. It also thanked Grossi and the IAEA for their efforts.
