New Delhi, Sept. 7 (SANA) At least six people were killed and six others injured Monday when a building housing students collapsed in New Delhi in northern India, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta told reporters, according to Reuters.

Gupta said water had accumulated in the basement during ongoing repair work and linked the accumulation to the collapse of the old structure.

Six people were killed and six others were taken to a hospital with injuries, Gupta said, while rescue teams continued searching the rubble for anyone who might still be trapped.

Local media reported that the building, located in the southern part of New Delhi near colleges and universities, consisted of a basement and five upper floors and was occupied by students.

Police were searching for the building’s owner, according to the reports.

Building collapses occur repeatedly in India, particularly in densely populated urban areas where unauthorized construction and weak enforcement of building regulations remain concerns.
