Kathmandu, Aug 31 (SANA) The death toll from devastating floods and landslides that struck Nepal’s Himalayan region last Wednesday has risen to 903, while 4,247 people remain missing, the country’s emergency management authority said Monday, according to Xinhua.
The authority said 267 people were injured in the floods and that search and rescue operations were continuing with the participation of about 20,819 security personnel.
More than 2,000 of those reported missing were concentrated in three districts; Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Makwanpur, while contact had been lost with 592 foreign nationals and 933 workers at hydropower plants or dam projects in Nepal.
In neighboring India, authorities in Uttar Pradesh state said they had recovered 17 bodies believed to be victims of Wednesday’s floods, while Chinese media reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing on the Chinese side.
Torrential floods, mudslides and rockslides swept through mountainous areas along the China-Nepal border in the Himalayas last Wednesday, causing significant loss of life and property damage and disrupting roads, communications and power supplies.
