Capitals, June 19 (SANA) Regional diplomatic contacts continued on Friday following the signing of a U.S-Iran memorandum of understanding, as planned talks in Switzerland were postponed and U.S. Vice President JD Vance canceled a planned visit to Switzerland.
According to Reuters, a White House spokesperson said late Thursday that Vance and the U.S. delegation were prepared to travel to Switzerland once final arrangements for the talks had been completed, adding that the logistics surrounding the negotiations had never been simple or predictable.
The developments came after Switzerland announced the postponement of talks that had been expected to bring together U.S. and Iranian negotiators to discuss implementation of the agreement reached between Tehran and Washington.
The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday addressing a number of outstanding issues between the two countries, including stabilizing the cessation of military operations and ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The memorandum is intended to end the conflict that began on Feb. 28 in the Middle East and stipulates that negotiations be completed within a renewable 60-day period, while Iran maintains its commitment not to seek nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, Egypt stepped up diplomatic consultations on the agreement and its regional implications.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate telephone conversations with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the memorandum and prospects for its implementation.
According to a statement issued by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty welcomed the agreement during his talks with Dar and praised the role played by Pakistan and other regional countries in supporting the negotiation process.
Dar, in turn, expressed appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to help bridge differences and create conditions that contributed to reaching the memorandum. The two sides agreed on the importance of continued consultation and coordination to support implementation of the agreement and advance efforts toward a lasting settlement.
In a separate call with Araghchi, Abdelatty discussed the details of the memorandum and its future prospects. The Egyptian foreign minister said the agreement represented an important step toward de-escalation and could help pave the way for broader diplomatic solutions in the region, expressing hope that it would contribute to security and stability.
