New York, Oct. 23 (SANA) Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ibrahim Olabi , said the Syrian government is prioritizing the issue of internally displaced persons (IDPs), noting that many government officials have themselves experienced internal displacement and fully understand its hardships and human cost.
Speaking at a side event titled “Reconstruction and Durable Solutions to Internal Displacement in the Aftermath of Mass Destruction Caused by Conflict and Disasters,” Olabi highlighted the “Syria Without Camps” vision launched by the Syrian government during the high-level week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The initiative aims to close camps across Syria by rebuilding areas from which residents were displaced, restoring basic services and providing livelihoods. Olabi said displacement had been driven by the practices of the deposed regime, which targeted civilians in their homes and deliberately destroyed infrastructure.
Olabi said the Syrian government had succeeded in addressing the root causes of internal displacement, but stressed that the return of displaced people required substantial resources.
He called on the international community to provide the financial, technical and political support needed to turn the “Syria Without Camps” vision into reality and end the country’s displacement crisis.
Israeli Attacks Exacerbate Displacement in Southern Syria
Olabi said Israeli occupation forces were creating a new displacement crisis in southern Syria through intimidation and abuses against Syrian citizens, including killings and abductions, including of children, as well as attacks on livelihoods and the destruction of property.
He strongly condemned the killing of a Syrian man with special needs by Israeli occupation forces on Thursday, drawing attention to protests held across Syria on Friday against the occupation.
Syria’s permanent representative to the UN renewed the government’s call for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities by halting these attacks and pressuring Israel to resume compliance with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.
Israeli occupation forces continue to violate the 1974 Disengagement Agreement through repeated incursions into southern Syria, raids on civilian homes, detentions, land bulldozing and shelling attacks.
Syria continues to demand the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from its territory, stressing that all measures taken by Israel are null and void and have no legal effect under international law. It also calls on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities and compel Israel to withdraw fully from southern Syria.
