Washington, May 6 (SANA) U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Washington would suspend operations aimed at removing ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz to allow space for negotiations to end the U.S.-Israeli-Iranian conflict, while maintaining the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports.
According to the Associated Press, Trump said in social media posts that the temporary pause in operations in the strategic waterway was intended to test the seriousness of ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. He added that the move followed requests from regional countries and came amid progress in talks between Washington and Tehran.
Trump said the decision was also influenced by requests from Pakistan and other countries, as well as what he described as significant U.S. military gains during the conflict and progress toward a “complete and final agreement” with Iranian representatives.
The White House did not immediately provide further details on the negotiations referenced by Trump. Talks have largely stalled despite a ceasefire that took effect nearly a month ago.
Trump recently announced what he called “Project Freedom,” an initiative aimed at assisting ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring their safe passage, warning that the United States would respond firmly to any attempt to obstruct the operation.
