Berlin, May 3 (SANA)     German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the United States remains the cornerstone of NATO, despite differences in views and recent tensions between Berlin and Washington.

In remarks reported by German broadcaster ARD, Merz said he remains firmly convinced that the United States is Germany’s most important partner within the alliance, stressing the strategic nature of the relationship despite disagreements over certain issues.

His comments come amid tensions following Washington’s recent decision to reduce the number of its troops stationed in Germany.

Responding to a question on whether the planned troop reduction was linked to differences with U.S. leadership over policy toward Iran, Merz denied any connection.

NATO had announced on Saturday that it is holding consultations with the United States to clarify details of the decision to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany.
