Brussels, March 31 (SANA) The European Union on Tuesday condemned attacks targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), describing them as a serious violation of international law.
European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said the EU denounces the attacks that killed peacekeepers and called for a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances. He stressed the need to ensure the safety of UN personnel and facilities in line with international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
The condemnation follows incidents in which an Indonesian peacekeeper was killed by an explosion near the border town of Adshit al-Qusayr, while two more soldiers were killed in a separate explosion near Bani Hayyan border village in southern Lebanon. Several others were injured.
The UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting at France’s request to address the attacks.
UNIFIL, which includes around 8,200 troops from 47 countries, is deployed in southern Lebanon, where clashes continue between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militia as part of the broader regional escalation also involving the US and Iran.
