New York, June 15 (SANA) The United Nations on Monday renewed its welcome for the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the importance of opening a humanitarian corridor through the strait to prevent a global hunger crisis.
According to UN News, UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Owa Dabu warned during the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that failure to reopen the strait would cause some of the world’s weakest economies to descend into chaos, increasing poverty and hunger for millions of people.
Dabu called for providing necessary resources to specialized UN agencies to prevent an international food security crisis.
She also presented the Human Rights Council with an update on the impact of Iranian attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, noting that the world’s energy supply network has been affected by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz is now open to navigation and that the United States will end its naval blockade on Iran, following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement.
