Ankara, March 4 (SANA) The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that NATO’s air defense systems stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean successfully intercepted and shot down a missile launched by Iran toward Turkish airspace. The Ministry confirmed that the incident resulted in no human casualties.
In a formal statement published on “X”, the Ministry detailed that air and missile defense units positioned in the Eastern Mediterranean detected a ballistic missile launched from Iran. The projectile was tracked traversing Iraqi and Syrian airspace before being identified as heading toward Turkish sovereign territory. The statement clarified that the interception and neutralization occurred at the optimal time to prevent any impact.
“We reserve our right to respond to any hostile acts against our country,” the statement continued. “We warn all parties to refrain from any actions that could lead to the expansion of the war in the region, and we will continue our consultations with NATO and our other allies.”
The Ministry emphasized that Türkiye remains committed to regional peace and stability, asserting its full capability to guarantee the security of its lands and citizens regardless of the source or location of the threat.
This escalation comes amidst ongoing U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran that began last Saturday. In response, Tehran has intensified its attacks across several Arab nations, targeting vital infrastructure, civilian and diplomatic facilities, and energy installations.
