Erbil, March 2 (SANA) Explosions were heard early Monday near Erbil International Airport in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region after air defenses intercepted at least two drones targeting the area, Agence France-Presse reported.
Air-defense systems protecting the airport shot down the drones near the facility, with loud blasts echoing across the city, AFP said.
Erbil, which hosts a large U.S. consular compound, has faced repeated rocket and drone attacks since a U.S.-Israeli confrontation with Iran began Saturday.
The escalating tensions have prompted precautionary shutdowns in the region’s energy sector. Gulf Keystone Petroleum said it temporarily halted production at the Shaikan oil field to safeguard staff, adding that no damage had been reported to the field or its infrastructure.
Dana Gas also suspended operations at the Khor Mor gas field on Saturday as a preventive measure, highlighting the growing impact of the conflict on critical energy facilities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
