Damascus, Feb. 23 (SANA) – Surgeons at Al-Mouwasat University Hospital in Damascus carried out a rare and complex facial reconstruction on Monday for a young man who sustained multiple fractures in a motorcycle accident, the hospital said.
The patient suffered extensive injuries, including fractures of both cheekbone complexes, a complete separation of the upper jaw, and three fractures in the lower jaw, one of which affected the temporomandibular joint. The trauma left him unable to close his mouth properly and caused double vision due to a fracture in the orbital floor.
The seven‑hour operation involved repairing the orbital floor, repositioning the eye, and reconstructing the facial bones to restore normal jaw alignment, according to Dr. Ahmad al‑Nabulsi, head of maxillofacial surgery. The patient’s jaw will remain immobilized for several weeks before gradual rehabilitation.

Al‑Nabulsi said the procedure also served as hands‑on training for postgraduate students and noted that the surgery was provided free of charge aside from the cost of fixation materials.
The hospital’s maxillofacial unit handles emergency trauma cases, including injuries from accidents, gunfire and explosions, and also performs reconstructive and corrective surgeries. The team recently completed a 14‑hour operation to rebuild a patient’s lower jaw after severe gunshot damage, in cooperation with plastic‑surgery specialists.
