Kuala Lumpur, Aug. 21 (SANA) Malaysia has recorded 58,079 dengue cases since early August, up 56.2% from the same period in 2025, with 55 deaths from complications of the disease, the Health Ministry said Friday.
The increase was initially concentrated in the Klang Valley, particularly Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Selangor. Cases rose 106% in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya and 61% in Selangor compared with the same period last year.
Elsewhere, cases increased 207% in the northern state of Perlis and 109% in the southern state of Johor as of August 15, underscoring the ministry’s warning that the national situation remained concerning.
The ministry said it had implemented intensive and targeted prevention and control measures, including early case detection, mosquito control and outbreak management, which had begun showing positive results. It warned, however, that the risk of dengue transmission remained high.
The increase was attributed partly to unpredictable weather, with rainfall and high temperatures creating favorable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes. Water-holding containers that are not properly maintained in residential areas also contributed to the increased risk, the ministry said.
Authorities said they would continue monitoring the situation and adjust measures according to epidemiological developments.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that can cause high fever, headaches, rash and muscle and joint pain. Severe cases can result in complications including dengue hemorrhagic fever.
