Aleppo officials, Italian NGO UPP plan rehabilitation of 17 health centers

ALEPPO, Feb. 20 (SANA) Health officials in Aleppo on Thursday discussed plans with the Italian non-governmental organization Unione per la Pace (UPP) to rehabilitate 17 health centers in the eastern Aleppo countryside.

The meeting focused on launching an integrated health support project funded by the European Union and implemented by UPP. The program is set to run for three years, following a six-month preparatory phase, according to Aleppo Health Director Dr. Mohammad Wajih Jomaa.

Jomaa said the project aims to restore and upgrade primary healthcare services in the towns of al-Safira, Tal al-Daman, and surrounding areas. Work on the initiative is expected to begin in early March.

The plan includes rehabilitating and equipping the health centers, improving service delivery, and introducing a structured referral and ambulance system. The area will be supplied with modern ambulances and a coordinated patient referral network to strengthen access to specialized care.

Officials said the initiative is part of broader efforts by local authorities, community groups, and international partners to rebuild health infrastructure in the province and expand access to essential medical services.

UPP, founded in Italy in 1991, operates internationally in humanitarian aid and development, supporting civilians affected by conflict while strengthening local systems such as healthcare and education.
