Damascus, April 25 (SANA) Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais said Saturday that the first trials involving figures linked to the deposed regime will begin with those implicated in offenses in Daraa, describing the move as part of a broader process aimed at revealing the truth, preserving memory, and advancing transitional justice in Syria.
Al-Wais said on X that the proceedings would not be ordinary criminal trials, but rather an important stage in addressing past abuses and establishing accountability through a specialized judicial track.
He added that beginning the process in Daraa carries symbolic and national significance, noting that the governorate was the cradle of the Syrian revolution and the starting point of events that reshaped the country.
The minister said justice requires that Daraa also become the starting point for the judicial path dedicated to transitional justice.
The Syrian government has arrested several figures from the deposed regime, most notably Atef Najeeb, who is known for crimes against civilians in Daraa at the beginning of the Syrian revolution.
