Damascus, Oct. 27 (SANA) Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Marwan al-Halabi met Tuesday with a delegation from the Union of Syrian Doctors and Pharmacists in France (UMPSF), headed by Vice President Ismail Matawa, to discuss expanding the union’s support for endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) centers and developing specialized medical training programs in university hospitals.

The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus, discussed strengthening support for the EBUS center at Latakia University Hospital and working to open similar centers at al-Mouwasat University Hospital and al-Watani University Hospital in Damascus, ahead of expanding them to other provinces.

Developing the endoscopy diploma

The two sides discussed the possibility of developing a diploma in endoscopy and interventional investigations in pulmonary diseases to qualify doctors and refine their expertise through training programs at university hospitals in Latakia and Damascus.

Al-Halabi stressed the importance of strengthening sustainable cooperation with the union, praising its efforts in organizing the medical conference in Deir Ezzor and establishing an EBUS department at Latakia University Hospital.

He expressed the ministry’s readiness to cooperate in implementing the proposed plans after preparing precise descriptions.

Diploma structure, training center

Khader al-Agha, head of the pulmonary diseases committee at the union, told SANA that the proposed diploma includes two main sections: internal pulmonology and thoracic surgery. Professor Jalal al-Aswad, a renowned surgeon in France, will lead the surgical section, while the union’s pulmonary committee will supervise the pulmonary section.

Al-Agha said the union seeks to establish a training center in Damascus combining theoretical and practical training, with university hospitals in the capital implementing the practical side of the program.

He noted that the union plans to organize two medical and surgical campaigns in April next year targeting Daraa, Quneitra and Sweida provinces, in coordination with the Ministries of Higher Education and Health.

The Union of Syrian Doctors and Pharmacists in France is a professional and scientific umbrella organization representing Syrian medical and pharmaceutical professionals residing in France, working to represent them before French institutions, support the health sector and enhance scientific and professional cooperation between its members and health authorities in Syria and France.

The Syrian-French Medical Conference was held on Oct. 17 at Badia al-Sham Hotel in Deir Ezzor, organized by the union in cooperation with the MEHAD and SOS Syrie organizations.
