Damascus, April 6 (SANA) – Damascus University is working to strengthen its scientific and research presence through a system of peer-reviewed academic journals and expanded international academic engagement, according to university officials.

Director of the university’s journals department, Dr. Shatha Nader Qoshji, said the directorate supervises 12 peer-reviewed scientific journals covering a wide range of scientific and humanities disciplines across the university’s faculties. These journals primarily publish research by faculty members as well as innovative studies by postgraduate students at the master’s and doctoral levels.

Qoshji noted that the journals receive submissions from researchers both inside and outside Syria, with studies undergoing academic peer review according to recognized scientific standards. Most research is published in Arabic with abstracts in foreign languages to increase global accessibility.

Among the latest publications is the Pediatric Dentistry Journal, which is issued in English with Arabic abstracts, a step aimed at expanding the university’s scientific reach and strengthening communication with the international academic community.

University officials emphasized the importance of linking scientific research to societal needs, ensuring that academic output contributes to addressing development challenges and supporting knowledge production. Efforts are also underway to include Damascus University journals in international indexing databases and academic rankings.

The university has intensified efforts in recent years to improve its global academic standing by expanding scientific publishing and strengthening international academic cooperation. These initiatives contributed to the university’s inclusion in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it the first Syrian university listed in the ranking.
