Damascus, June 5 (SANA) The Chargé d’Affaires of the EU Delegation to Syria, Michael Ohnmacht, said that Syria’s economic recovery requires a significant increase in investment and expanded technical and economic cooperation, stressing the importance of close coordination between the Syrian government, donor countries, and the private sector to drive sustainable development.
Speaking to SANA on the sidelines of the National Private Sector Dialogue Conference in Damascus, Ohnmacht said international support alone is insufficient to achieve early recovery in Syria, which requires billions of dollars in investment.
He called on the Syrian private sector to play an active role in this phase, alongside contributions from donor countries and the Syrian government in creating the necessary environment and opportunities.
He highlighted the importance of technical support, training programs, and drawing on international expertise to strengthen Syrian institutions, noting that the EU will soon launch a technical assistance center to support Syrian ministries and institutions and build their capacity to cooperate with and engage the private sector.
Ohnmacht stressed the importance of full coordination between the Syrian government, donor countries, and the EU to support development and economic recovery efforts.
The National Private Sector Dialogue Conference was organized by Syria’s Ministry of Economy and Industry in Damascus from June 1 to 3, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the Government of Japan. The conference addressed strengthening public-private partnership, developing a shared economic vision for the recovery phase, improving the business and investment environment, supporting production and exports, and expanding the private sector’s contribution to sustainable economic development and reconstruction.
