Vienna, June 6 (SANA) Syrian Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Mudar al-Okla condemned in the strongest terms the attack targeting the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the United Arab Emirates, describing it as a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Speaking during an emergency session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors in Vienna, al-Okla stressed that attacks on nuclear facilities pose grave risks to people, the environment and energy security.
He called on relevant international organizations to fulfill their responsibilities in preventing any future attacks or threats against nuclear installations and to strengthen international efforts aimed at protecting peaceful nuclear facilities.
The remarks came amid growing international concerns following the attack on the Barakah plant, which prompted emergency discussions at the IAEA and the United Nations.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has repeatedly warned that attacks on operating nuclear facilities could have severe regional consequences and lead to the release of radioactive material.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, located in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, is the Arab world’s first operational nuclear power facility.
International officials and several countries have condemned the attack, stressing that civilian nuclear infrastructure must not be targeted under any circumstances.
