Berlin–Zagreb, March 9 (SANA) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday voiced concern over rising energy prices amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, warning of potential repercussions for the German economy.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Merz said Germany is working to strengthen its energy independence in order to reduce costs and shield its economy from external shocks.
Meanwhile, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković announced that his government will introduce a temporary cap on gasoline and diesel prices as global oil supplies tighten due to the expanding conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Plenković said the measure, approved during an extraordinary government meeting, will take effect Tuesday and aims to ease the impact of rising energy costs and protect household living standards.
The developments come as the widening conflict in the Middle East raises concerns over global energy supplies, particularly after disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — a key route for around one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas trade.
