Washington, Aug 22 (SANA) The U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq, Tom Barrack, said the occupied Golan is Syrian territory according to international law and UN resolutions.
In an interview with Clash Report published Saturday on X, Barrack said Israel continues to occupy the Syrian Golan in defiance of UN resolutions and the international order, which recognizes the territory as belonging to Syria.
UN Security Council Resolution 497, adopted on December 17, 1981, declared Israel’s decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on Golan Heights as “null and void and without international legal effect.”
On April 29, 2025, Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Asaad al-Shaibani told a UN Security Council session that the Syrian Golan remains under occupation and called for the implementation of Resolution 497 and Israel’s withdrawal to the June 4, 1967 line.
