Damascus, Aug. 7 (SANA) The activities of theSyria Summer Family Festival 2026 opened on Thursday at the Damascus Citadel as part of the summer program organized by theMinistry of Culture, with official and public participation.
The opening follows the festival’s launch in Idlib, where its first activities were held at the city’s Cultural Centre on July 30, before moving to Latakia, where events began at al-Orouba Park on August 4. The festival will continue in other governorates in succession, with the aim of making cultural activities accessible to families in various areas.
The first day of the festival in Damascus included artistic performances, cultural and interactive activities, competitions, and entertainment prizes for families and children. The activities aim to enhance the presence of culture in daily life and provide children and adolescents with opportunities for learning, exploration, and participation in a family environment.
Minister of Culture’s remarks
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Culture Muhammad Yassin al-Saleh said that Syrians, with their various backgrounds, share a common national history, and that culture has always been one of the bridges uniting Syrian society.
He added that the festival was designed as a family event bringing together culture, arts, education, science, sports, crafts, and books. He said the choice of the Damascus Citadel as the venue aims to make the historic site a space for cultural, artistic, and knowledge-based activities.
Al-Saleh stressed the importance of respecting public spaces and preserving the citadel and its facilities, noting that culture is reflected in behavior as much as in artistic expression.
Child-focused activities and performances
The festival included a puppet theatre performance by “Taraji” Puppet Theatre, featuring musical tableaux inspired by Damascene heritage and performed by students from the Modern Skills School. Interactive storytelling sessions were also held, combining entertainment with educational messages.
Khuta Theatre Company presented heritage-inspired performances combining movement, music, and traditional costumes, reflecting elements of Syrian cultural heritage.
The Al-Marashli Ensemble performed an evening of religious chanting, presenting a selection of muwashahat, hymns, and spiritual praise songs inspired by heritage traditions.
The opening day also included an entertainment competition featuring questions, interactive activities, and prize distribution.
The festival will continue at the Damascus Citadel until August 21, featuring artistic and heritage performances alongside activities for children and families.
