Makhlouf: Collective work is important to confront environmental crises

Damascus, SANA-Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Hussein Makhlouf, called for to the necessity of collective work to confront the environmental crises to which Syria was exposed as a result of terrorism that was exported to it.

Makhlof, during a meeting of the fifth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly through video conference, which was held in Nairobi, pointed out to the importance of exchanging experiences to develop national plans for managing environmental and natural disasters and raising awareness to reduce their occurrence.

The Minister affirmed that Syria has been exposed during the past years to a lot of destruction, devastation, and deliberate and organized attacks by terrorist groups, supported by some countries, which affected the Syrian people, their environment and livelihood adding that the damage also targeted health facilities, water, treatment and energy stations and escalated environmental and life problems.

Makhlouf called on the international community to support Syria to overcome the environmental problems it has encountered as a result of organized terrorism, indicating that the unilateral economic measures imposed by US and the EU on the country increased the suffering of the Syrian people and had the largest negative impacts on their ability to respond to the Corona pandemic.

The meeting was held under the title “Contribution of the environmental dimension to sustainable development on building a resilient and comprehensive world for all in the post-Corona pandemic phase”.
