Deputy FM offers condolences to Pakistani ambassador, warns terrorism will backfire

Damascus, SANA – Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad demanded that countries which support terrorism in the region stop doing that, warning that the danger of terrorism will backfire on those countries.

Mikdad visited the Pakistani Embassy in Damascus to voice the Syrian leadership and people’s condolences to the families of the victims of the terrorist attack that hit a school in the Pakistani city of Peshawar two days ago.

An armed terrorist group burst into an army-run school in Peshawar on Tuesday, claiming the lives of 148 people, mostly schoolchildren. The Taliban movement claimed responsibility for the attack.

Addressing the reporters, Mikdad warned that terrorist acts exclude no one, “which is why Syria and Pakistan have fallen victim to” those acts.

While expressing Syria’s solidarity with Pakistan and condemnation of the terrorist attack, he renewed that “We have repeatedly stressed that unification of counterterrorism efforts is needed.”

Mikdad drew a parallel between the targeting of school children in Pakistan and the terrorists’ criminal acts of shelling and attacking schools in Syria.

An example of these acts lay less than three months away when twin bombings rocked a school compound in Ikrima neighborhood in the city of Homs, leaving over 30 people dead and more than 115 wounded, mostly schoolchildren.

He reiterated his warning that terrorism could well come to the doorstep of the very countries which are backing terrorism “to kill children in Pakistan and Syria.”

Pakistan’s Ambassador in Damascus Waheed Ahmed stated that the terrorist thinking targeting Pakistan and Syria is one and the same, expressing appreciation of the latter’s condolences and support.

Pakistan, the ambassador said, stands by any international effort that could lead to eliminating terrorism, expressing his confidence that Syria will rout terrorism and put the crisis behind it.
