Al-Jaafari: Syria sovereign right on the occupied Golan is non-negotiable

New York, SANA – Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, said that Syria sovereign right on the occupied Syrian Golan, until the line of June 4th, 1967, is non-negotiable, adding that Syria’s occupied territory should be completely restored.

Al-Jaafari made his remarks during a UN Security Council’s meeting held on Thursday to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

Al-Jaafari added that the double standards policy has become inherent for some of UN Security Council’s member states which just pay lip service to human rights, the international law and principles of the UN Charter, meanwhile they deliberately disregard the odious Israeli occupation which still persists in Palestine, the Syrian Golan and a swath of South Lebanon over more than 50 years.

He affirmed that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian, Syrian and Lebanese territories, the displacement of their people, the confiscation of properties and establishment of settlements, relying on takfiri Zionist creed, is terrorism.

The Syrian diplomat pointed out that the West, especially the US, has always protected the Israeli entity and granted it the immunity from prosecution despite its repeated violations of hundreds of UNSC resolutions demanding it to end its occupation of the Arab territories and withdraw to the line of June 4th, 1967, which in turn encouraged Israeli entity to perpetrate heinous crimes, the most recent of which the killing of dozens and the injury of thousands of Palestinian civilians who took part in peaceful protests organized over the last few weeks commemorating the Palestinian Land Day.

Al-Jaafari renewed Syria’s firm stance in support of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, in addition to guaranteeing the refugees’ right to return in accordance with UNSC resolution no. 194 (1948).

He denounced the stance of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process who has deliberately overlooked the situation in the occupied Syrian Golan and the Israeli entity’s continued violations and hostile practices there.

Al-Jaafari said that some states tried to include irrelevant topics in the current debate in an attempt to divert the attention of the UN Security Council away from the Israeli practices meantime they said no word about ending the Israeli occupation of the Arab territories, including the Syrian Golan as if the restoration of the Golan is not a legitimate right to the Syrian people.

He wondered “Where have those states and their talk about counterterrorism and the international humanitarian law been when Syrian citizens were arrested and arbitrarily taken to Israeli jails, just as what happened to Sudqi al-Maqt who was re-arrested because of his audio and video documentation of the close cooperation between the Israeli occupation forces and Daesh and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organizations.

Al-Jaafari called on the UN Security Council to take immediate measures against Israeli entity, force it to halt its aggression and violations and oblige it to end its occupation of the Arab territories including the occupied Syrian Golan and withdraw from it till the June 4th, 1967 line according the UNSC resolutions 242, 338 and 497, in addition to the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
