Electricity Minister: Exceptional measures to limit effects of crisis on electricity sector

Damascus, SANA – Minister of Electricity Imad Khamis stressed the need of developing work

mechanisms and setting viable plans to overcome the great challenges facing the power grid in Syria.

During his meeting with officials from provinces’ electric power departments on Saturday, Minister Khamis highlighted the need to adopt exceptional measures that would limit the effects of the crisis on the future plans of the Ministry.

He called upon all citizens to shoulder their responsibilities in protecting this vital sector, vowing to
continue fighting corruption and the mismanagement and squandering of funds.

In statements to SANA, Director of the Electric Power Company Dr. Mohammad Abdullah said the company has big plans for producing electricity from a power station in the southern region with a capacity of 750 megawatts and a similar one in Jandar with 450 megawatts capacity.

He said the company also signed a contract with a Russian firm to build a new power generator in Tishreen Thermal Power Plant, with a capacity of 600 megawatts, adding that the results of these projects will be noticed starting from next week.

In turn, head of Tishreen Thermal Power Plant Bassam Jabbouri said the plant is currently generating nearly 200 megawatts out of 1,100 megawatts capacity, adding that the reason is a shortage in fuel and that the plant can operate in full capacity once fuel is provided.
