Damascus, SANA-Syrians have a special fondness for sweets like al-Naem “soft” or “Ramadan Bread”, which is a delicate, fried dough served with rich molasses, where more people consider that is no Ramadan in Syria is complete without al-Naem.

It is dating back to nearly 200 years, in which people of Damascus are keen to have it on Ramadan Iftar tables.

In the past, al- Naem dish was considered a poor person’s dessert, because its price was cheap compared to the prices of other types of Damascene sweets.

Nowadays, it is part of the popular heritage and popular memory of the city of Damascus, and its manufacture moved from Damascus to many Arab countries, such as Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon, to become a distinctive flavor in Ramadan.
