Damascus, Oct. 24 (SANA) Saad Baroud, Director of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, said Syria’s accession to Mecca Agreement on combating corruption represents a strategic step toward enhancing the country’s national legal and legislative framework.
Baroud told SANA Friday that the importance of this accession lies in aligning and developing domestic legislation in accordance with modern international and regional standards for combating financial crimes.
It also provides a binding international legal framework that grants Syrian judicial and oversight authorities direct mechanisms for exchanging evidence and investigative information.
Baroud added that the agreement is also significant in accelerating efforts to track down smuggled funds, recover assets, and extradite criminals in cooperation with member states.
Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani stated that Syria had signed a package of treaties and foundational statutes of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), foremost among them the Convention on Combating International Terrorism, the Mecca Agreement to Combat Corruption, initiated by Saudi Arabia, and the Statute of Police Cooperation.
