Damascus, Sep. 24 (SANA) The General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport announced Thursday the completion of calibration and flight testing of modern air navigation systems at Damascus and Aleppo international airports, with the equipment entering service in accordance with approved technical and operational requirements.
The authority said via its Telegram channel that the work covered ILS/DME and DVOR/DME systems, enhancing the airports’ readiness for 24-hour operations, including at night and during periods of reduced visibility, fog and difficult weather conditions.
The authority explained that putting the systems into service will enhance the safety and continuity of air operations, increase the airports’ capacity to handle additional flights and carriers, and support the expansion of destinations and Syria’s regional and international air connectivity. The step is part of ongoing efforts to modernize civil aviation infrastructure.
According to the authority’s latest statistics, 17 Syrian, Arab and international airlines operate at Damascus International Airport, while 14 airlines operate at Aleppo International Airport.
The ILS/DME and DVOR/DME systems function via high-precision radio signals to guarantee operational safety: the ILS provides crucial lateral and vertical guidance during landing approaches under adverse weather conditions, while the DVOR system supplies real-time bearing and distance data for en-route navigation.
The deployment and calibration of these systems represent a vital step in aligning national civil aviation with highest international standards, ensuring seamless 24/7 air transport and enhancing Syria’s regional connectivity.
