Damascus, Sept. 14 (SANA) Syria’s People’s Assembly on Monday approved a hearing with Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir on the reasons behind the latest increase in petroleum product prices and the circumstances surrounding the pricing bulletin issued on Sunday.

The hearing, approved at the request of the head of the Assembly’s Energy Committee, will seek clarification from the Energy Ministry on the factors behind the increase and the considerations behind the decision.

The move comes as the People’s Assembly resumes the third sitting of the first extraordinary session of its first legislative term.

The session’s agenda also includes hearing from Education Minister Mohammad Abdul Rahman Turko.

The Energy Ministry has said the latest fuel price adjustment was driven by exceptional increases in the global cost of petroleum products, higher transport and insurance expenses, and reduced domestic refining capacity during the ongoing overhaul of Baniyas Refinery.

The ministry has described the measure as temporary, saying prices and costs will remain under review in line with developments in global markets and the restoration of domestic refining capacity once the refinery overhaul is completed.
