New York, May 21 (SANA) Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, said on Wednesday that protecting civilians is the foundation of legitimacy and stability, stressing Syria’s commitment to upholding international humanitarian law through accountability, the rule of law and cooperation with the international community.
Speaking during a UN Security Council session on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, Olabi said Syria’s participation reflected efforts to translate commitments into action.
“Protecting civilians is not a slogan,” Olabi said, describing the suffering experienced by Syrians during years of conflict, including the destruction of homes and attacks on hospitals.
He said Syria was determined to turn that painful experience into a commitment to building “a state that protects, not excludes; that nurtures, not neglects,” while reinforcing accountability and respect for international humanitarian law.
Olabi also referred to remarks delivered during a Security Council session on Syria on May 15, saying the transitional justice process was advancing as one of the pillars of the “new Syria.”
He added that public trials had begun for individuals accused of committing serious violations against Syrians.
