Latakia, Sept. 5 (SANA) Syrian Internal Security Forces, in coordination with the Counter-Terrorism Department, have arrested Major General Jalal Kamel Saqr, a former commander in the deposed regime’s army, on charges of involvement in violations and military operations during the Syrian revolution.
Saqr, from the village of Bsayn in the Qardaha countryside, was a commander of the 18th Infantry Brigade in the deposed regime‘s forces.
Investigations confirmed Saqr’s involvement in war crimes and arbitrary detention operations against civilians during the revolution, according to a security forces statement. He participated in military operations against unarmed civilians in Damascus province and Eastern Ghouta, and supervised arbitrary arrest campaigns in Daraa province.
Saqr later served as chief of staff of the 14th Division and its deputy commander, before taking command of the division until mid-2016. He was then transferred to the operations headquarters in Damascus, where he remained until his discharge on May 1, 2017.
The arrest is part of ongoing efforts by the Interior Ministry to pursue those involved in crimes and violations against Syrians and bring them before the competent judiciary. The ministry continues to implement the principle of ending impunity, achieving transitional justice and ensuring the rights of victims and their families.
